Landmark Donors

The Pratt Gift

In 1999, Edmund T. Pratt Jr. gave $35 million to endow Duke’s School of Engineering. Pratt was a member of the Class of 1947 and CEO of Pfizer. The school was named in his honor.

The Fitzpatrick Gift

Michael J. Fitzpatrick (Class of 1970) and Patricia W. Fitzpatrick (Class of 1969) gave $25 million in 2000 to establish an innovative center for advanced research in light-based technologies. The Fitzpatrick Center and the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics are named in their honor.

LORD Corp. Distribution

A four-decade philanthropic relationship with the LORD Corporation culminated in 2019 with a distribution of $261 million. The Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science was named for Thomas Lord, former corporation chair. The department’s chair was named for Donald M. Alstadt, former president of the corporation.

Professorship Donors

A named professorship is the highest honor the university can bestow on a faculty member. Eponymous professorships are created by the university to honor individuals significant to Duke’s history. Endowed professorships are created by donors through lifetime or estate gifts.
