Duke Engineering Celebrates the Class of 2023

While avoiding intermittent thunderstorms for much of the weekend, Duke University celebrated members of its Class of 2023 with a string of events and celebrations. After the university-wide event on the morning of Sunday, May 14, Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering gathered at 3:00 pm in Cameron Indoor Stadium to recognize the 290 members of this year’s graduating class in a ceremony led by Vinik Dean of Engineering Jerome P. Lynch.

In remarks, Lynch recognized some of the Class of 2023’s unique accomplishments, such as sending a team to the XPRIZE semifinals in Singapore and winning two of the 2023 Forever Duke Student Leadership Awards, two Goldwater Scholarships, and a seat on the Duke Board of Trustees. And quoting one of the class’s most well-known and most beloved (fictional) professors, he encouraged graduates to adventure out into the world with their newfound skills and expertise.

“As another great Dean, Albus Dumbledore, once stated – ‘let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure,’” Lynch said to a stadium filled with graduates, family, friends and loved ones. “Much like the students of Hogwarts, you have acquired rare knowledge and awe-inspiring skills that allow you to create and deploy magical solutions previous generations could only dream of.”

Congratulations from Dean Lynch

“As another great Dean, Albus Dumbledore, once stated – ‘let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.'”

Jerome P. Lynch | Vinik Dean of Engineering

Lynch challenged the Class of 2022 to be wary of their abilities, however, and to add their distinctive voices and knowledge to the community to ensure these emerging technologies are used safely and equitably. From editing genomes with CRISPR to augmenting robotic capabilities with AI, he said, these technologies pose risks equal to the potential they hold.

“This is where the faculty look to you to exert true thought leadership,” Lynch said. “With the deep technical expertise you gained here at Duke combined with a broader world perspective you obtained from our liberal art traditions, we expect you to ask these harder questions that represent your commitment to advancing the common good.”

Nikita Suri ’23, president of Engineering Student Government, and James Zheng, president of Engineering Student Government Class of 2023, also spoke during the ceremony as representatives of their classmates.

“Our charge as Duke engineers is not to save the day as individual innovators, but to work collaboratively to overcome shared adversity and build systems that work better,” said Zheng, a BME/ECE double major from Fort Collins, Colorado. “This generation is often stereotyped as more interested in swiping through TikTok than in advancing meaningful change. Looking around today, I see hundreds of examples of why this is not the case.”

“When I came to Duke I would never take risks in the way I do now. Here, I have learned to lean into uncertainty and seize the opportunities that we are presented with no matter what the stakes are,” said Suri, a ME major from Winter Park, Florida. “As we move forward outside of our Duke life, uncertainty is everywhere, but we are equipped for it. We graduate today with incredible friends by our sides and ready to dive into the uncertainty of the future.”
