The Maputo Sanitation (MapSan) trial is a long-term study of the health impact of upgraded shared, private latrines constructed by Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor in urban Maputo, Mozambique. Children born into households served by these facilities experienced reduced exposure to enteric pathogens and increased linear growth compared with a comparable cohort of children served by existing poor-quality sanitation. This trial provides important new evidence on urban sanitation’s role in supporting public health and well-being.
