Yiran Chen Inducted into HPCA Hall of Fame

With his eighth publication in the High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA) proceedings, electrical and computer engineering (ECE) faculty member Yiran Chen has been inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame. Only fifty-three other researchers in the field belong to the Hall of Fame, and Chen is the second such designee in recent years; ECE faculty member Benjamin Lee was inducted in 2018.

Chen’s most recent publication is titled “ACCPAR: Tensor Partitioning with Co-optimization of the Communication and Computation for Training Acceleration in a Heterogeneous Deep Learning Accelerator Array.”

Chen, an internationally recognized expert in machine learning, is the director of the NSF Industry–University Cooperative Research Center for Alternative Sustainable and Intelligent Computing and co-director of Duke Center for Evolutionary Intelligence, which develops innovative memory and storage systems and new applications for machine learning, neuromorphic computing and mobile computing systems. Chen has more than 350 technical publications to his credit and holds 93 US patents.
