Why I Chose Duke Engineering

Duke was one of the only programs that offered industry-based classes. I felt that I was missing those skills, and everything I learned ended up being highly relevant to my internship. It was also one of the few programs that built time into the curriculum for an internship, while many other programs were yearlong or thesis-based.

Before Duke Engineering

My background combined medical technology design and tissue engineering, which allowed me to explore many areas of biomedical engineering but not specialize in one. Medical device design has always been my passion. Because I was unable to gain internship experience in that area, pursuing a Master of Engineering in MedTech Design felt like the best way to feel ready for the real world. I feel confident in medical device design, particularly in mechanical roles.

After Duke Engineering

I aim to enter the medical device industry focusing on research and development, and I am currently seeking a full-time position. The program prepared me by taking me through the process from product ideation to launch. That experience is valuable for both startups and established MedTech companies. I feel much more confident with all the skills and knowledge in engineering I have gained.

5 Ways to Maximize Your Time at Duke

1. Treat every course as an opportunity to learn skills that directly apply to the real world. This program truly walks you through everything in the MedTech industry.
2. Be proactive. Give it your 100% at all times.
3. Make strong connections with your cohort and professors. We are all entering the same industry, and being friendly and professional will go a long way.
4. Speak up in group projects and engage in the program’s culture.
5. Grad school is fun. You are still a student so don’t forget to have fun.
