How Duke’s Online FinTech Program Puts People First
Many online master’s programs struggle with a sense of distance. Rather than accepting that anonymity as the cost of flexibility, Duke’s online Master’s in Financial Technology was designed around a different idea: students should feel known.
“A lot of times when you join an online program, people don’t even know you—who you are, what you’re about,” shared program lead and Executive-in-Residence John Fimbel. “We take time early on to meet with every student and ask, ‘If we’re two years in and you’ve graduated—what does that look like? Where are you trying to be?'”
Through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous courses and in-person residences on Duke’s campus, all online students take the same courses, learn from the same faculty and earn the same Duke degree as their peers pursuing a traditional track. Online students can complete the program in 24-29 months.
“The online program is really the same program you would have if you were here,” Fimbel said. “Whether you’re a residency student or an online student, you have the same access to our faculty and graduate opportunities, and we encourage you to leverage them.”
That tailored support includes a seminar series, virtual faculty advising and support from a team of career services professionals in Graduate Student Programs & Services.

“We are unique from other institutions because we are actually embedded right within the engineering school,” said Bridget Fletcher, executive director of GSPS. “We also have great relationships with all of the central offices, which creates that seamless support system that is tailored specifically to engineering graduate students.”
Part of that support is delivered during on-campus residences held for FinTech online students, which gives them the opportunity to connect with their cohort and faculty in-person.
“The residency experiences were especially meaningful as an online student because they fully integrated us into the Duke community,” shared FinTech online alumnus Alex Ilgenfritz. “The one-on-one faculty interactions, in-person classes and campus tours created a sense of belonging equivalent to that of on-campus students. Those connections still stand out as some of the most supportive moments in the program.”
Ilgenfritz, who now works as an onchain researcher at Coinbase, credits the program for opening doors to his ongoing career.
“The program gave me the technical grounding I needed to pivot to my current role,” he said. “Through research opportunities, I learned to conduct rigorous analysis and develop blockchain-based models, including DLT systems, onchain options frameworks and reinforcement learning approaches to liquidity provision.”

Another unique quality of the program are the capstone projects that students complete in collaboration with an industry partner. As the culminating experience of the degree, teams of students work together to focus on developing solutions to real-world problems, and present them to a sponsor or an external review panel.
“My capstone project, modeling DTCC’s post-trade operations on a distributed ledger, had a direct and lasting impact on my career,” said Ilgenfritz. “It allowed me to work on a real-world financial-market problem and design a blockchain-based solution alongside DTCC personnel.”
FinTech students also have the opportunity to connect with industry professionals during the annual Digital Assets at Duke (DA@D) conference. As a premier annual conference exploring the evolving landscape of digital assets, the weekend event convenes a diverse assembly of financial professionals, regulators, policymakers, technologists, academics and legal experts for thoughtful and evidence-based dialogue. Participants gain valuable insights directly from top regulators and industry leaders and leave equipped with knowledge and forward-looking perspectives to guide decisions and drive innovation within their own organizations.
“DA@D was a standout experience and truly a leader in the industry. It brings together top thinkers, practitioners, and innovators in digital assets, and being part of it was both inspiring and professionally valuable,” said Ilgenfritz.
“Students love that they’re hearing about real work, real companies and real problems happening right now,” added Fimbel. “A lot of us have a foot in industry and a foot in academia, and that really drives our relevancy.”
Whether students are logging in from across the country or stepping onto campus for a residency, the experience is intentionally the same—rigorous, applied and deeply connected to industry. The result is a program that offers flexibility without distance and prepares graduates not just to enter FinTech, but to help shape what comes next.
“We want people to feel seen, to feel known, and to feel that we’ve got their back,” said Fimbel. “That shared investment in their success doesn’t stop when the program ends.”
