Inaugural Triangle Game Jam Highlights Intercollegiate Innovation
A team of first-year Duke developers brought home the award for Judge’s Choice at the first-ever event of its kind in the region.
Duke's Master in Game Development, Design & Innovation celebrated its first graduating class with a spring Demo Day showcasing the program's studio-based approach to game development.
Between solving mysteries far into space or running a restaurant in a small village, there was something for everyone to enjoy at the first-ever spring Demo Day hosted by Duke’s Master in Game Development, Design & Innovation (GDDI) on May 4.
Demo Day marked the completion of a two-year-journey by the first graduating class to publish their games. GDDI welcomed students, faculty, staff, clinicians, researchers, prospective students and industry professionals from developers like Epic Games and Scopely to Penn Pavilion for an afternoon of networking and hands-on showcases.



The professional polish of the games demoed is no accident. GDDI, part of Duke Engineering’s Institute for Enterprise Engineering, replicates a real-life studio environment by guiding students through the full arc of game development from ideation to playable product. Students step into different roles within their studio to foster a team-based production experience that connects engineering with the player experience.
“The mini-studio structure gave our whole cohort a professional mindset from day one,” shared Benjamin Blas, a 2026 GDDI graduate. “We treated the project like a real working studio with real deadlines, real working hours and real accountability, and you can see that in the quality of the final product.”



Blas’s studio developed Interstellar Drive, a retro-futuristic co-op rhythm road trip game following a human and an alien on their way to a cosmic music festival. One player steers the car while the other handles a beat mechanic synced to the music.
“Think Guitar Hero, but you’re both in it together,” said Blas.
As obstacles close in, the driver has to work to stay in the power-lane while the other player hits the beats in rhythm to blast them down.
“One of the most rewarding parts was seeing people who had watched the project grow from the beginning genuinely amazed by how much we had accomplished in such a short time,” he added, “and watching new players experience it for the first time was just as exciting.”


Across the room, ECH8, a single-player narrative puzzle game, revolves around the mystery behind the disappearance of an entire species. The game opens with a catastrophic impact on the player’s spaceship its way to investigate a mysterious signal in deep space.
“The energy around ECH8 was very positive,” said Will Zhang, a 2026 graduate and representative for the studio behind the game. “Players specifically praised our sound design and overall sense of immersion.”

The showcase wasn’t all intergalactic. Also on display was a demo of Scaley Kitchen, where players step into the role of Poppy, a young chef running a village restaurant alongside her dragon companion. In this cozy cooking game, players gather ingredients, serve customers and progress through a whimsical, narrative-driven world. Rounding out the four capstone games was Manga Hero, an action RPG set in a world inspired by different classic mangas. Players step into the role of Hiro, embarking on a journey in search of his missing father.
“Demo Day showcased the incredible breadth of what our students are creating,” shared Ernesto Escobar, the executive director of GDDI. “For a program hosting its first large-scale showcase, I believe the quality, variety and ambition of the work on display was truly impressive.”


In addition to the four graduating capstone games, the event also showcased three first-year studio projects, independent student work and collaborations with Duke partners. Several of the projects showcased at Demo Day demonstrate how game technology can be used to tackle real-world challenges beyond entertainment, from education and training to research and health care.
“These projects represent the kind of interdisciplinary, high-impact work that makes Duke and GDDI unique,” Escobar added.
Demo Day also featured products born out of GDDI’s collaborative game jams. Since 2025, GDDI has partnered with NC State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on hosting the Triangle Game Jam, giving students the opportunity to build and test their development skills alongside their peers.
For the first graduating class, Demo Day doubled as a launchpad into industry, and thanks to the program’s technical depth and studio-style training, alumni are ready to hit the ground running.
“The transition feels less like stepping out of school and more like moving from one studio to another,” said Blas. “We didn’t enter the job market feeling like students. We entered it already thinking and working like developers.”
