Duke University Center for WaSH-AID aims to leverage tech-enabled solutions to water sanitation and hygiene problems worldwide

Expanding Access to Clean, Safe Sanitation Options

In many disadvantaged communities around the world—including here in North Carolina—there is a lack of safe, effective and affordable sanitation solutions to treat human waste and other contaminated wastewaters. Increasing urbanization and water scarcity add urgency to the need for new approaches to help households and communities  conserve, recycle and reuse water and energy, and reach a higher standard of safety and dignity.

The Duke University Center for Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Infectious Disease (WaSH-AID) is a translational research team focused on developing and sustainably deploying technology-based solutions for resource-constrained regions around the world. Based at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering and supported with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WaSH-AID is radically redesigning onsite waste treatment under the Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge (RTTC), and also manages the Sanitation Technology Cluster, a network of over 20 global partners striving to accelerate the commercialization of new products and technologies across a spectrum of sanitation issues.
