The massive datasets being compiled in our society present both new challenges and opportunities in the field of signal and information processing. While many classical methods and their underlying assumptions are not equipped to handle the explosive growth in the dimensionality of modern datasets, this increase in dimensionality can also be beneficial. Notably, high-dimensional settings enable the development and application of powerful asymptotic methods in probability theory and statistical physics, allowing for precise characterizations that would be too complex in moderate dimensions.
