Undergraduate Student Assistance Programs
Thanks to the generosity of Duke Engineering donors, eligible undergraduate students with demonstrated high financial need may receive funding for educational and professional opportunities not covered by financial aid. Eligibility is determined through the Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support and the requirements of the selected fund.
Maclin Endowment Fund
The vision of Valecia Maclin, Class of 1992, was to ensure that eligible Pratt School of Engineering undergraduates with demonstrated financial need do not miss educational opportunities because of expenses not covered by their financial aid package.
What the Fund Covers
The fund supports academic and professional needs that remain after available discounts and fee waivers.
Covered expenses may include:
- Device repairs
- Grad school prep
- Conference fees
- Professional attire

Eligibility
Originally established to support Duke student members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Maclin Fund now provides assistance to ALL Pratt School of Engineering undergraduate students with demonstrated high financial need who meet the fund’s eligibility requirements.
- Must be a Pratt School of Engineering undergraduate student (Freshman through Senior) as their primary major.
- Must be identified as having high financial need through Duke’s Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support.
- Funding requests should be submitted at least one (1) month prior to the intended use of funds.
- Students must receive approval before incurring an expense.
- Retroactive requests are generally not eligible for funding consideration, except in documented cases involving unforeseen or emergency circumstances.
- Career maximum award amount: $1,000 per student.
WIN Empowerment Fund
Even the best laid plans run into roadblocks.
Created through the generosity of the Pratt School of Engineering group within the Duke Women’s Impact Network (WIN), this fund ensures that no eligible student misses a career opportunity because of unexpected expenses not covered by their financial aid package.
What the Fund Covers
The fund provides support for needs remaining after discounts and waivers.
Covered expenses may include:
- Grad school prep
- Travel for interviews, conferences, and professional society meetings
- Professional attire
Eligibility
Open to all Pratt Juniors and Seniors with financial need.
- Must be a Pratt School of Engineering Junior or Senior (primary major).
- Must be identified as having high financial need through Duke’s Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support.
- Funding requests should be submitted at least one (1) month prior to the intended use of funds
- Students must receive approval before incurring an expense.
- Retroactive requests are generally not eligible for funding consideration, except in documented cases involving unforeseen or emergency circumstances.
- Career maximum award amount: $1,000 per student.
Apply for Funds
IMPORTANT: Students may apply to only one funding opportunity—either the Maclin Endowment Fund or the WIN Empowerment Fund—for the same need, conference, or opportunity. Eligibility for either fund requires demonstrated financial need as determined by the Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support.
