Granular materials surround us in everyday life: cereals, ores, soil, and pills are some of many examples. Despite their ubiquity, our understanding of these materials is limited, in no small part due to the difficulty of visualizing them. I will describe approaches that we have developed to "look inside" these materials. Of course, the goal is to use these tools to understand the behavior of granular materials, and this talk will focus on recent results that have addressed this issue.
