Grand Challenge Summit
In 2009 Duke hosted the national first-of-its-kind National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenge Summit in response to a report by the National Academy of Engineering that outlined the 14 most daunting problems facing the world today. Duke officials, along with partners at the Olin School of Engineering and the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering, began devising strategies for incorporating into their education programs an appreciation of, and a desire to solve, those challenges.
In 2010, the team was joined by other key universities who hosted summit events in Phoenix, Boston, Seattle and Chicago, followed by a culminating national event held in Los Angeles in October 2010. The next event will be held in 2013, in London, England.
