Non-invasive brain stimulation technologies like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) have garnered widespread interest as potentially powerful tools to modulate brain activity for research and therapeutic applications. Improving the efficacy of these technologies for the wide range of possible applications has proved difficult without a mechanistic understanding of the neural response to stimulation; to address this we use computational modeling to simulate the effects of TMS and tES on biophysically realistic brain neuron models. I'll talk about how improving our visualization methods led to a more intuitive understanding of the single-neuron response to brain stimulation.
