You're Invited: Sculpture-Building Party in FCIEMAS October 20

Date: Sunday, October 20, 2013
Time: Build: 1-4 p.m. * Installation: 5-6 p.m.
Place: FCIEMAS Atrium

Come be a part of art!  You can help assemble a multi-part geometric sculpture for permanent installation in the atrium of the Fitzpatrick CIEMAS building on October 20.

Rendering of the sculpture's four orbs

The sculpture was designed by noted mathematical sculptor George Hart (georgehart.com). It consists of four orbs (four, five, six and seven feet in diameter), each consisting of a large number of identical colored laser-cut aluminum components. At the start of the event, there will be just stacks of parts, thousands of screw and bolts, and tools; at the end, after everyone has assembled the orbs, they will be hoisted into place with mechanical lifts.

George Hart will lead the “sculpture barnraising," overseeing construction and installation.

Duke students, faculty, staff, visitors and their families are invited to come watch and participate. Everyone is welcome, and participation can be for as little as fastening one bolt, or can extend for the whole event.

To get an idea of how the whole event will proceed, check out the photo report and time-lapse video documenting a similar sculpture barnraising orchestrated by Hart five years ago at Albion College.

If you would like to participate for one hour or more, please RSVP by Thursday, October 17 by e-mailing kathy.peterson@duke.edu.
