Why Duke?

Graduate programs in the Pratt School of Engineering prepare our students for fulfilling careers in academia, industry and the government sector. Ranging from research-oriented M.S./Ph.D. programs and certificates, to the technological management focus of the Masters of Engineering Program, our graduate offerings emphasize interdisciplinarity and in-depth instruction and collaboration with a world-class faculty in our our research centers and laboratories and research groups.

Click to read more about "Why Duke"As is true of any strong graduate. program, your attraction to Duke will largely derive from the strength of faculty in your desired area of study. From a slightly broader perspective, however, graduate students at the Pratt School derive considerable benefit from a highly collaborative and vibrant surrounding infrastructure, including such features as an on-campus medical center, several university-wide research initiatives in which Pratt and our science departments systematically interact, and close proximity to the business and entrepreneurial resources of the Research Triangle Park. These relationships provide ongoing opportunities for intellectual growth, development of technical depth, and employment after graduate school. We work hard to make our students feel part of a community of scholars that extends beyond their immediate research group. We do this partly through an aggressive first year fellowship structure for incoming students. Providing such fellowship opportunities gives students the time and flexibility to explore the breadth of their chosen discipline, to carefully choose an adviser, and to intelligently design their course of study. We also create a range of opportunities such as seminars, workshops, social gatherings and networking events, and special departmental graduate course offerings designed to stimulate intellectual interaction throughout graduate study at Pratt. Such interactions are fueled in part by the active participation of both faculty and students in our research centers and laboratories and research groups

Department Websites

Each of our engineering departments (and the Master of Engineering Management Program) maintain Web sites with information about educational programs, research direction and projects, and our faculty.

Explore the department pages and identify faculty in fields that interest you. We encourage you to contact those professors by email or phone and discuss the opportunities here at Duke. Get the names of current graduate students and interview them by phone to learn more about the learning environment here. We also encourage you to read about other graduate students.

Publications

Pratt publishes a monthly e-newsletter and a semi-annual magazine. Reading these publications will help you get a better understanding of the scope and context of Pratt's graduate programs.
